A 19-year-old Muslim young man and his 22-year-old friend were lynched by a mob in Nargund, Karnataka. The young man succumbed to death while his friend was grievously injured. The attack happened on the boys after some local Bajrang Dal leaders gave an anti-Muslim speech to a crowd in front of the Nargund Police station when they were protesting the filing of cases against Hindutva supporters in connection with communal incidents. According to the police, the attack was motivated by “hatred towards the Muslim community.” After a few days, they threatened the accused's father to withdraw the case which was filed for killing his son by saying that “his two other sons will suffer the same fate.” Nargund Deputy Superintendent of Police YS Yegangowda was asked about the death threats to Sameer’s family. “The local police are being watchful, and doing whatever they can to protect Subhansaab and his family, but we haven’t received any orders from senior officers on providing them proper security.” He also mentioned - “Even though the death threats were true, it was a normal issue…”
