19-year-old Sameer Shahpur, a tea seller from Nargund, was murdered, and his friend Shamseer Khan Pathan was attacked by members of Hindutva outfit Bajrang Dal in the Gadag district of Karnataka. The alleged attack took place on the evening of 16th January 2022 while the two were returning after closing their business. Shahpur sells tea while Pathan is a photographer. According to Gadag Superintendent of Police Shivprakash Devaraju, the incident continues the communal flare that had erupted in November last year. Devaraju added, multiple FIRs had been registered on the members of both the communities and several arrests too had been made. So far, the police have not established any relationship between the victims and the perpetrators. Based on the video footage available, the arrested four people are Bajrang Dal leader and civil contractor Sanju Nalvade, Mallikarjun alias Gundya Muttappa Hiremath, Channabasappa alias Channu Chandrashekar Akki, and Sakrappa Hanumanthappa Kakanur. All of them are from Nargund. The victim's family complained to the police and had said it to be a hate crime purely based on the victims' faith.
