This incident occured when Shabbir, an inmate of Tihar jail complained to Rajesh Chauhan, the superintendent of jail number 4, that the induction stove in their barracks was broken. The jail guard then began hitting Shabbir after becoming enraged by the complaint. Shabbir was then called into Rajesh Chauhan's office and chastised for "trying to be a neta" and filing complaints. Rajesh Chauhan and a few other jail guards beat Shabbir once more in secret. They didn’t stop here. Rajesh Chauhan took a metal Om symbol, heated it, and branded the “Om” on shabbir’s back Followed by a two-day food ban on Shabbir, Rajesh Chauhan informed Shabbir that he had "converted to Hinduism as he had 'fasted' during Navratri". When this matter came to light the court ordered the Tihar Jail authorities to inquire into the matter and submit a report within 24 hours.
