Shahid said in his statement that six to seven drunken men had asked his relatives not to play cricket on the street outside their home in Bhup Singh Nagar. As they continued to play cricket, the men were joined by more than 40 young men who attacked the family with batons, iron bars, hockey sticks and water pipes, police said. In an attempt to save themselves, the victims ran to their home, but some attackers managed to break in and beat them. Those who could not enter threw stones at the house.
