Three Muslim men were lynched in the wee hours on Sunday in Khowai distirct of Tripura in India’s North East, Police said. Zayed Hossain (28), Bilal Mia (30), and Saiful Islam (18) were chased by a mob, armed with lethal weapons, near village Namanjoypara when they were allegedly found stealing five cows, Superintendent of Police of the district Kiran Kumar told Clarion India over phone. “The villagers caught them five about kilometers from the locality and they were lynched”. One of the victims had tried to escape but he too was caught some kilometres away and brutally thrashed, SDPO Teliamura Sonacharan Jamatia said. They were rushed to a medical college in the capital Agartala where doctors declared them dead on arrival. It is a case of communal violence, Kumar said, adding that police have opened an investigation into lynchings under section 307 (attempt to muder), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement). Neither transport nor slaughter of cattle is banned in Tripura, the police said, adding they have registered two cases of lynching against unidentified people. Notably, the police have registered three FIRs at three different police stations including one against the three dead victims as SDPO Teliamura said that a case of cow theft has been registered against the trio at Champahour PS. “The owner of the cows lodged a complaint of theft of cows against them, that is why we filed the case.” The cases over lynching have been registered at and Kalyanpur PS, Mungiakami PS, Jamatia informed. “We have not arrested anyone yet as we are trying to identify the three,” he said, adding that they are also awaiting autopsy reports. The victims are residents of villages which fall in Sonamura police limits in Sepahijala district.
