Kashmiri Inmates Thrashed in Punjab Jail
2020-06-12
Two undertrials from Kashmir, Sajad Hussain and Irshad Ahmad, held in Gurdaspur Jail in Punjab, were stripped naked, beaten, and humiliated by other inmates. They were also called ‘terrorist’ just by virtue of being Kashmiri Muslims and were forced to clean the clothes, fetch drinking water and do more such tasks for the other prisoners. Their Lawyer, Ankit Grewal, submitted a complaint to the Chief Justice of Punjab High Court mentioning that the incidents are a clear violation of the rights of prisoners. However, the Jail authorities denied any such allegations, claiming they were “exaggerations” of a “minor issue” between the inmates. Ahmad is accused in an FIR registered in Pathankot in 2016 for his alleged links with the ISI and having visited Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh for allegedly clicking photographs of sensitive areas of the Indian Army.
